RSG CEO Margaret Bourke viewed the new accessible boat for people with disabilities at the river Shannon on Friday last 30th October. She also went on the boat for a trip and really enjoyed it. It is a lovely boat, very calm floating and has the strappings for wheelchair in place. This ‘Access for All’ project has been coordinated by the Lough Ree Angling Hub.
It is a wonderful facility in Ballyleague. It takes up to 8 wheelchairs but they are starting initially with 4 wheelchair users. All the operators of the boat have been fully trained and insured.
It is fully operational and will commence in January 2021. At present they are doing courtesy trips. Ciaran Mullooly, RTÉ Midlands Correspondent has been very involved with a number locals in getting this boat to become a reality. Massive fundraising was undertaken. People with disabilities will be given boating rates on weekdays. It will also be available to the public mostly on weekends.
It is well worth a visit and a trip will be great. Support is needed to keep this excellent facility on board.
