Personal Assistant Service

Independent Living

Independent Living is a philosophy that highlights self-determination, equal opportunities, and self-respect for people with disabilities. It asserts that individuals, regardless of disability, have the right to exercise individual independence and participate fully in society. The essence of Independent Living is the freedom to make decisions about one's own life and to be fully engaged in the community. However, it doesn't imply complete self-sufficiency; rather, it acknowledges the importance of having the choice to live with the assistance of a Personal Assistant.

Misconceptions about Independent Living often arise from interpreting it as the ability to live entirely without assistance. Instead, it's about individuals with disabilities taking control of their lives, making their own choices, and accessing necessary support to do so. This support can come in the form of Personal Assistants, relieving family members or partners from the burden of care responsibilities.

The Centre of Independent Living emphasises the importance of choice and assistance, rather than complete self-reliance. This approach acknowledges that needing support does not diminish one's independence but enhances it by enabling individuals to live on their own terms.

The Social Model of Disabilities, another relevant movement, aims to change societal attitudes towards disability by emphasising access, equality, and inclusion as fundamental rights. It focuses on removing barriers that restrict the life choices of people with disabilities, enabling them to be equal and independent members of the community. By addressing disabling attitudes and eliminating barriers, the Social Model strives for the full involvement of people with disabilities in society.

In summary, Independent Living promotes the autonomy and full participation of individuals with disabilities, recognising that support and assistance are essential components of realising this vision. The movement aligns with the broader goal of creating a society that values diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities for all.

Personal Assistant Service (PA)

A Personal Assistant (PA) is provided to people with physical/sensory disabilities so that they can lead a more independent life.

They assist the Service User in all aspects of daily living and are determined by their requirements and needs. This may include personal and domestic, social, educational, or work activity.

The Service User directs their own service so as to engage in independent living and apply self-determination and control over their own lives.

We treat our Service Users with dignity and respect, ensuring your privacy and allowing you as much autonomy, independence, and involvement in your care as you wish subject to the health, safety, and welfare of our staff.

RSG supports the principle of autonomy and empowerment and recognises the right of all persons to make choices which, supports them to live as independently as possible.

An example of duties your PA can assist you with (this list is not exhaustive):

  • Personal care – that includes assisting with showering or bathing, dressing, continence care and general grooming. This could also include assisting with a physio approved exercise plan.
  • Domestic tasks – this includes assisting you in maintaining your home to a safe and hygienic level.
  • Social – going out to the pub/concerts, meetings, matches etc.,
  • Lifestyle - if you are in employment or education, any assistance you may require in these areas as well.
